ViXS® and Morega Systems Team up to Power First-of-Its-Kind Digital Media Hub for Consumers’ Content

Toronto, Canada – January 5th, 2012 – ViXS Systems, Inc. and Morega Systems, Inc. today announced a strategic partnership to enable, for the first time, the seamless access and streaming of premium, personal, and user-generated content to and from multiple devices within the home. Morega’s proprietary content portability technologies will be integrated with ViXS XCode media processors and embedded into consumer electronics (CE) products, set-top boxes (STBs), network attached storage (NAS) devices, and multimedia gateways.

The integrated solution will give rise to a new class of CE devices that allow individuals to watch their video content across multiple screens, with the ability to stream, protect, convert, and operate across different media standards seamlessly.

“Technology and broadcasting have finally intersected to provide a seamless, secure, and highquality digital media experience for the consumer,” said Sally Daub, president and CEO of ViXS Systems. “Together, ViXS Systems and Morega have solved the challenges associated with integrating broadcast, personal, and user-generated content across all CE devices in the home, and are taking the digital media entertainment industry to the next level.”

The combined offering detects media content present on all CE products within the home, and comply with Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) interoperability guidelines. The joint ViXSMorega technology supports a broad range of CE products, including set-top boxes, personal computers (PCs), mobile phones, tablets, digital video recorders (DVRs), and NAS devices. Using a Web browser or a mobile app, consumers can view and access all of their personal, usergenerated, and premium content on their preferred devices of choice.

“The hassle involved with moving and managing content across a multitude of devices, and dealing with the frustration of digital rights management (DRM) incompatibilities, are now things of the past,” said Philip Poulidis, president and CEO of Morega Systems Inc. “Morega’s software running on ViXS Systems’ hardware platform is a powerful solution to this problem, yet it’s flexible enough to meet the distinct needs of all parties involved in the multimedia value chain – from consumers and content creators, to manufacturers and service providers.”

Using HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) server extensions, Morega employs adaptive bit rate streaming technology to ensure a high-quality viewing experience across limited bandwidth networks. By combining the crypto processing cores in the ViXS system-on-a-chip (SoC) chipsets with Morega’s downloadable, cross-platform security framework, the joint offering also offers support for digital transmission content protection (DTCP)-IP and DRM-protected content.

The integrated solution will be on display at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in both the ViXS Systems booth (South 2 – MP25958) and the Morega booth (South 2 – MP25757). Demonstrations will feature streaming and porting of protected and user-generated content between NAS, DVR, media gateway, and media streaming devices designed by various original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partners.

Morega Systems Awarded Patent for Breakthrough Content Portability Technology that Supports TV Everywhere

Morega’s solution supports the placeshifting of optimized premium content to all types of devices via either streaming or sideloading – and allows the viewing of that content to be tracked

Toronto, ON, July 19, 2011 —
Morega Systems, a developer of content portability solutions, revealed today that the company received patent approval for its breakthrough content portability technology. This unique content delivery solution gives satellite, cable and IPTV service providers, and equipment manufacturers a better way to extend premium, multimedia content beyond the television and the set-top box to support the Connected Home and TV Everywhere.

“We are thrilled to receive this patent, which further validates the uniqueness of our TV Everywhere solution. Our technology allows service providers and manufacturers to give consumers a choice in how they extend their content to view it on alternative devices such as tablets, mobile phones, and PCs,” said Philip Poulidis, president and CEO of Morega Systems. “We have essentially put legs on the TV while preserving the interest of the entire TV Everywhere value chain, from content providers and advertisers to service providers and consumers.”

"The desire of consumers to watch any content on any device at any time and in any location is undeniable,” said Vince Vittore, principal analyst at Yankee Group. “For consumers under the age of 25, we believe the TV may end being a secondary screen in the very near future. Any technology that gives service providers the ability to address these needs while simultaneously easing concerns of content owners over issues such as security and measurement will be welcomed by the market."

Today, the predominant way to “placeshift” content – in other words, to deliver content to any device such as a mobile phone, tablet, or a PC – to support TV Everywhere is by streaming content across a broadband network connection. But Morega’s technology takes TV Everywhere to a new level by allowing consumers to placeshift via two methods: adaptive bit rate streaming with quality-of-service or sideloading. With Morega’s unique sideloading solution, authorized users can securely download content either directly from the cloud or from a set-top box onto alternative viewing devices.

This solves two key challenges posed by cloud-based mobile video delivery solutions: First, streaming or sideloading from cable, satellite or IPTV networks at the edge is much more bandwidth-efficient to the operators and requires fewer network resources for transcoded content management and storage.  Second, it preserves the original broadcast ads while providing the ability to track and report mobile viewing metrics.  Also, with the sideloading option, users no longer need a broadband network connection to view the content.

In addition, Morega’s sideloading technology uses a sophisticated back-office, standards-based and proprietary authentication, encryption and digital rights management (DRM) system to protect copyrighted material and to assure the delivery of high-quality video entertainment content.

“To date, the adoption of TV Everywhere has also been stifled by content providers’ legitimate concerns about losing advertising revenue,” continued Poulidis. “We’ve solved this problem by incorporating a unique back-office analytics system into our solutions that allows content providers and operators to track when specific content is viewed on any device, thus preserving advertising revenue for content providers.”

The new patent specifically covers the transcoding, streaming and downloading of premium content from a video source to a mobile platform such as a smartphone or a laptop or tablet computer. It also covers Morega’s unique approach to track, restrict and monetize premium content via digital rights management (DRM), which leverages both industry standards from the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) and Digital Transmission Content Protection (DTCP), as well as proprietary methods to protect copyrighted material and assure high-quality video when customers securely download content from either a set-top box or directly from the cloud.

Morega is currently working with several high-profile partners, technology alliances and associations to support the evolution of the Connected Home and TV Everywhere.
